Even his father s detailed survival lessons hadn t covered Orlin being scared, alone and
friendless on a strange planet. However, Orlin wasn t an idiot. He could take care of himself.
He still had a handful of change that would probably at least buy him dinner. Maybe after he
ate something he would be able to figure out what to do.
It took travelling at what seemed like a scant inch a minute to make it across the
building. The ceiling tiles were fragile, so he had to be careful where he placed his weight or
he could fall through. It didn t help that the place was filled with dust as well as cobwebs big
enough that Orlin would have nightmares about the size of the creatures that could create
things that large. However, Orlin didn t dare go back to the guard since the man had sent
him in there to begin with. No way would he return to that man or let anyone send him back
either.
Peeking under tile after tile revealed a series of rooms obviously set aside for meetings
and temporary sleeping chambers for those caught overnight at the spaceport. Cautiously,
Orlin lifted one more tile, revealing a hallway beneath him and no people in sight.

With a smile he lifted the section away from its framework. Gripping the metal firmly,
he slid through the opening and dangled above the floor for a moment before dropping to
the ground.
Looking both ways, he was pleased to see no one else appeared to be nearby. Now all
he had to do was find his master and hope he didn t get captured and arrested for assaulting
a psychopathic doctor.

Chapter Three
Aester was in the middle of a meeting when a pale-faced Styr raced into the room.
Bowing low, the soldier approached and muttered the words Aester dreaded most to hear.
 Orlin is missing.
Panic gripped him as he struggled to appear calm. A king couldn t have a meltdown
before his subjects. Inside he screamed. His beautiful pet was gone. What happened? he
snapped.
Styr paled even further. The urge to throttle the guard was strong. Aester s face must
not have been as expressionless as he hoped because the guard replied quickly as if trying to
get the details out before Aester killed him.
I delivered him to Dr Tabbock. After a few minutes I heard some noises. I didn t want
to interfere with the examination so I waited. After a while I figured it was taking too long,
so I used the master password and opened the door. The doctor lay injured on the floor and
Orlin was missing. I left the doctor in his office with another guard and came to tell you what
happened.
What does the doctor have to say for himself?
 He said Orlin attacked him.
Aester stood up. That s ridiculous. Orlin is a gentle creature.
He was frightened for me to leave him alone, Styr admitted. He didn t like the
doctor.
Aester paced as he tried to sort out what Styr had told him. Something was suspicious
here. After their time together on the ship, Aester knew Orlin wasn t a flighty, easily
intimidated creature who d run off if spooked. If he d attacked the doctor, there must have
been a reason. Memories of other pets and slaves who d been frightened of the doctor ran
through his mind. Aester and his brothers had always thought new people just didn t like the
tagging procedure, but maybe there was more to it than they d suspected.
Have the doctor escorted to the dungeon. He s under arrest until I find Orlin and can
get some clear answers.

Whispers rushed around the room as the other royals of the kingdom muttered a
hushed cloud of comments.
Lady Ralli, a distant cousin, spoke first. You d arrest a doctor over your pet?
Aester didn t hesitate to respond. Yes. The doctor was in charge of Orlin and let him
escape. Since my pet felt the need to run away, I want to hear what he has to say about it
before releasing the man. Something is wrong here and I m thinking Dr Tabbock isn t
innocent of any wrongdoing.
I had a slave once who went crazy after being tagged by the doctor, Aester s uncle,
Lord Wreal, announced with a thoughtful look. I put it down as transfer shock but perhaps
I was too hasty. I m sure the man does only what s necessary to process the slaves.
Others at the meeting offered information about previous pets who had had issues after
seeing the doctor. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
